Shiziyang Channel Construction Passes Halfway Mark, Expected to Open to Traffic in 2029

New Progress on the Mega Project

On May 2, according to CCTV News, following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, yet another "mega project" spanning the Pearl River Estuary in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area — the Shiziyang Channel — has reached a new construction milestone. In the early hours of the day, the eastern anchorage of the Shiziyang Bridge, a key control project of the Shiziyang Channel, completed anchor block construction at a height of over 30 meters above ground. Workers are now carrying out follow-up tasks including surface finishing and curing after the concrete pour.

Construction Passes Halfway Mark as Bridge Takes Shape

Currently, the Shiziyang Channel project has passed the halfway point of its construction period, with progress on some interchanges, approach bridges, and other connecting works exceeding 50%. Key procedures such as box girder erection and deck panel installation are underway at the construction site, and the basic outline of the bridge structure has begun to emerge.

The Shiziyang Channel connects Guangzhou's Nansha District with Shatian Town and Humen Town in Dongguan. Comprising a cross-river main bridge and onshore connecting roads, the route spans approximately 35 kilometers and is expected to be completed and opened to traffic in 2029. Once operational, it will further enhance the cross-Pearl River Estuary transportation network in the Greater Bay Area and significantly reduce travel time between Guangzhou's Nansha and Dongguan.

Five World Records Demonstrate Engineering Prowess

The main span of the Shiziyang Bridge is a double-deck suspension bridge featuring a total of 16 lanes across its upper and lower decks, truly earning its title as a "super bridge." The project's main towers stand at an imposing 342 meters — equivalent to a 110-story building.

Notably, the Shiziyang Channel has set five world records in the field of double-deck suspension bridges, covering five core metrics: main tower height, main span length, anchorage foundation size, number of lanes, and main cable diameter. These record-breaking achievements not only showcase China's cutting-edge expertise in mega bridge engineering but also provide invaluable engineering experience for bridge construction worldwide.

Greater Bay Area Transportation Network Rapidly Taking Shape

From the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, and now the Shiziyang Channel, cross-sea and cross-river corridors in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area continue to multiply. The construction of the Shiziyang Channel will further eliminate transportation bottlenecks between the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River Estuary, promote deeper integration between Guangzhou's Nansha and Dongguan, and help the Greater Bay Area build a "one-hour living circle."

As the project advances toward its 2029 opening target, this mega engineering marvel — holder of multiple world records — is poised to become yet another shining infrastructure landmark of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, injecting new momentum into coordinated regional economic development.
