WeChat Keyboard Launches Cross-Device 'Air Transfer' Beta

WeChat Input Method, Tencent's standalone keyboard app, is rolling out a new 'Air Transfer' feature in beta that enables seamless cross-device file sharing across Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. The feature mirrors Apple's AirDrop functionality but works across all major platforms — a significant advantage for users in mixed-device ecosystems.

The update was first spotted by Chinese tech outlet IT之家 on May 3, with select users gaining access to the feature through the latest beta builds.

How Air Transfer Works

The feature supports sending photos, videos, and files between devices without consuming mobile data. Users have 2 ways to establish a connection:

• Linked devices — Transfer files directly between your own devices logged into the same WeChat account
• QR code scanning — Connect with other users by scanning a code, no account linking required
• No cellular data needed — Transfers happen over local connections, saving bandwidth
• Cross-platform — Works between any combination of Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS

This approach positions WeChat Input Method as a universal file-sharing tool that sidesteps the platform lock-in of Apple's AirDrop or Samsung's Quick Share.

Beta Version Requirements

To access Air Transfer, both the sending and receiving devices must run the latest beta versions:

• Android / iOS: Version 3.3.0
• Windows: Version 2.0.0
• macOS: Version 2.1.0

Users who haven't received an automatic update notification can request a download link by sending the phrase 'Air Transfer' through the help and feedback section within the WeChat Input Method app on any platform.

Why This Matters for Tencent's Ecosystem

Tencent continues to expand WeChat Input Method beyond a simple keyboard tool into a broader productivity utility. Cross-device file transfer has long been a pain point for users operating across Android, iOS, and desktop platforms. While solutions like AirDrop, Nearby Share, and third-party apps like SHAREit exist, none offer truly seamless integration across all 4 major operating systems from a single app.

The feature also strengthens Tencent's position in the input method market, where it competes with established players like Sogou (which Tencent acquired in 2021) and Baidu Input Method. Adding utility features like Air Transfer gives users a compelling reason to switch or stay.

What Comes Next

The feature remains in limited beta testing, with only a subset of users currently able to access it. Tencent has not announced an official release date, but reports suggest a public rollout is expected 'soon.'
