A 30-Year-Old Classic Component Gets a Modern Makeover

Microsoft recently announced that the Windows 11 26300.8346 preview build has officially introduced a completely redesigned Run (Win+R) dialog box. This classic component, which has been a staple since the Windows 95 era for over 30 years, has finally received a comprehensive overhaul aligned with modern design language — complete with dark mode support and faster performance than its predecessor.

Faster Response Time: From 103ms to 94ms

The most surprising highlight of this redesign is the new Run dialog box's performance. According to official Microsoft data, the old dialog box took approximately 103 milliseconds to fully open after pressing Win+R, while the new version requires only 94 milliseconds — an improvement of roughly 9% in response speed.

This improvement is technically impressive. Typically, UI modernization comes at the cost of performance — richer visual effects and animations mean more rendering overhead. However, the Microsoft team managed to achieve a speed boost while simultaneously adopting the Fluent Design specification, a rare feat in UI modernization efforts.

Microsoft also noted that 94 milliseconds is not the finish line. There is still room for improvement, and future versions will continue to be optimized.

Design Challenges: Balancing Modernization and Simplicity

In an official blog post, Microsoft acknowledged that designing the new Run dialog box for Windows 11 posed significant challenges. The team had to complete the modernization while preserving the original responsiveness and clean user interface.

Microsoft explained: "When creating the new experience, we knew the original dialog was fast. We also needed to deeply understand how users interact with it, introducing modern design language while maintaining the characteristics of the original version."

The new dialog box adopts the Fluent Design specification with native dark mode support. Its visual style is consistent with Windows 11's overall design language, bidding farewell to the noticeably "retro" look of the past.

Data-Driven Decision: Removing the Browse Button

During the modernization process, Microsoft conducted an in-depth analysis of user behavior data, leading to one significant decision — removing the Browse button. The data showed that the vast majority of users directly type commands or paths when using the Run dialog box, with the Browse button seeing extremely low actual usage.
